Press the "SurfSim" button [1] to alternately stop and start the flow of sound. When playing, the button's background picture will scroll.
To the right of the "SurfSim" button are two controls: the sets popup menu [3] and the main volume slide [4]. The volume slide is for adjusting the overall intensity of the surf sound. I'll get to the sets popup after explaining the other controls.
There are two separate sound tracks, A and B [2]. You can adjust the characteristics of each track independently using a popup [5] to select the wave type (either "Breaking Waves," "Slow Swells," or "Offline") and three slide controls [6] for adjusting intensity, tempo, and timbre. When SurfSim is playing, you hear a 50-50 mix of sound from these two tracks.
Now, back to the sets popup. Each item in the top half of this menu corresponds to a complete set of values for the slides and popup menus of both tracks. When you adjust any of the track controls, you're actually modifying the current set; you can make the change permanent by choosing "Save Set," or you can undo it by picking "Revert Set." There are four default sets. To create new ones, select "Edit Sets窶ｦ"
You can toggle display of slide controls for each track by clicking on the triangle [2] preceeding the track name.
PowerPC users can turn on active panning stereo sound by checking the "SurroundSurf" box in the preferences dialog (select "Preferences窶ｦ" from the file menu).
68K users should probably stick with 11kHz sound (in the preferences dialog), since the player saps more CPU power at 22kHz.
